AI Overviews: how to know if they cite you

An AI Overview is a generated answer at the top of Google Search with a handful of citations. Being cited is the new position one; not being cited on a query you rank for is the new page two.

The short answer

AI Overviews are answers Google generates for some queries and shows above the organic results, with citations to the pages the answer was built from. They appear on a growing share of informational queries and on more product and local queries than a year ago. Whether one appears, and whether it cites you, changes from day to day.

How sources are picked

Google has not published the rule, but sampled Overviews show a consistent pattern: cited pages already rank in the top results for the query or a close variant, answer the question directly near the top, and carry a clear author, date and structure. In other words, the same things that make a page quotable for any answer engine (AEO) decide citation here too.

How to track it

For each keyword you care about, record three things daily: is there an AI Overview, which domains does it cite, and is yours one of them. Position alone no longer tells you what the top of the page looks like. MonoRanks records this next to the daily position for every tracked keyword and shows the day an Overview appears and the day it stops citing you.

If you are not cited

  1. Check the page that ranks for the query: does the first paragraph answer it?
  2. Make the heading the question, add a short FAQ with the follow-up questions people ask.
  3. Add or fix the author, the date and the Article or FAQPage schema.
  4. Wait a week and check again. Overviews refresh, and cited pages change.

See GEO readiness for the tracking and AEO readiness for the page checks.

Common questions

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

For informational queries, often yes for uncited pages. Cited pages keep a share of clicks and the attribution.

Can I opt out?

You can keep Google from showing snippets with nosnippet rules, but that also affects normal results. Most sites should aim to be cited instead.

How often should I check?

Daily for the keywords that matter. Overviews appear and disappear per query.
